Privacy Policy

The University of Zurich (UZH) is pleased that you are visiting the UZHCAREER.CH platform. Since data protection is an important concern for UZH, we would like to briefly inform you below about which data UZH collects, further processes and discloses from visitors and users of the UZHCAREER websites within the framework of the applicable data protection regulations, for what purpose this is done, and which measures have been taken to ensure the security of this data.

1. Subject Matter of Data Protection

Data protection serves to protect personal rights. It obliges data processors to act lawfully and grants the persons concerned enforceable rights with regard to the processing of their personal data. According to § 3 of the Act on Information and Data Protection of the Canton of Zurich (IDG ZH), personal data means all information relating to an identified or identifiable person. This includes, for example, information such as name, address, telephone number, email address or IP address.

2. Data Collection, Processing and Storage

Each time our website is accessed, information is stored in a log file by our hosting provider Switch AG, Zurich (Switzerland). These so-called log files contain information about the date and time of the website visit, accessed files or pages, status codes, and system information such as browser, operating system, language and version of the browser interface. This data does not allow any direct conclusions to be drawn about a specific person.

In addition, IP addresses are also stored in log files. For us, these cannot readily be assigned to a specific person.

If you wish to view our website, we collect the aforementioned data, which is technically necessary for us to display our website to you and to ensure stability and security.

This data is processed for the following purposes:

  • Ensuring the network infrastructure and technical administration
  • Optimizing the use of certain web services
  • Identifying and tracking unauthorized access attempts.

The web server log files are stored for a period of 6 months after access has ended. After that, the web server log files are automatically deleted, unless a detected attack on our network infrastructure leads to civil or criminal prosecution of the attacker and therefore makes further storage necessary.

3. Consent to Further Data Use

The use of certain services on the UZHCAREER websites, such as newsletters, contact forms or web applications, may require further collection, processing and longer-term storage of personal data such as name, address or email address. In order to use these services, you must agree to the General Terms and Conditions (GTC Career Services). The processing of the data entered during registration is based on your consent. You may withdraw consent you have given at any time. To do so, it is sufficient to send us a notification by email (info@careerservices.uzh.ch). The legality of the data processing already carried out remains unaffected by the withdrawal.

4. Disclosure of Personal Data

Personal data is disclosed to third parties, such as other authorities, only if this is required within the framework of mandatory legal provisions, such as official requests or court orders, or for the purpose of legal or criminal prosecution, for example in the event of attacks on the UZHCAREER network infrastructure. Personal data is not disclosed to third parties for other purposes, with the exception of point 9 below: Use of Google Web Fonts and point 10: Integration of Google Maps.

Nevertheless, UZH may commission service providers to further process the data collected via the UZHCAREER websites for the purposes mentioned above. UZH and the commissioned third-party service providers are obliged, by means of legal, technical and organizational measures, to ensure compliance with data protection regulations.

In addition, content from third parties, such as videos from YouTube or map material from Google Maps, may be integrated within this online service. This always requires the providers of this content to detect the IP address of the users. Without the IP address, they would not be able to send the content to the browser of the respective user. The IP address is therefore necessary for displaying this content. We make every effort to use only content whose respective providers use the IP address solely to deliver the content. However, we have no influence over whether third-party providers store the IP address, for example for statistical purposes. Where we are aware of this, we inform users accordingly.

By using the services of the UZHCAREER websites, you consent to the use of Google services, such as Google Web Fonts, Google Maps and YouTube, and therefore also to the disclosure of data to the Google service. Please note that Google applies a different data protection practice than UZH. More information on how user data is handled can be found in Google's privacy policy: https://www.google.de/intl/de/policies/privacy/

5. Tracking Settings

In order to better adapt the content structures and navigation mechanisms of the websites to the needs of users, page views and clicked elements within the pages are logged and analyzed. For this purpose, the Matomo software is used. Matomo uses so-called “cookies” (for the use and prevention of the use of such cookies, see point 6 below). The usage information generated by the cookies, including the shortened IP address, is not forwarded to third parties, but is stored on UZH servers for the purpose of usage analysis and website optimization. The IP addresses are anonymized immediately during this process. It is therefore not possible to assign the analysis results to a specific IP address or to carry out personal behavioral monitoring.

6. Cookies

When individual UZHCAREER websites are accessed, so-called temporary cookies may be used. These are small files that are stored on your computer by the UZHCAREER website you are visiting in order to enable optimal use of the websites. You can generally prevent the use of such cookies by making the corresponding settings in the web browser you use. However, we would like to point out that rejecting, blocking or deactivating cookies may lead to restrictions in the functionality of accessed UZHCAREER websites.

7. Cross-References (Links) to Websites of Other Providers

This privacy policy applies only to web pages on UZHCAREER. Where access to content from other providers is made available via links, we ask you to observe their privacy policies. UZH is not responsible for either the content or the data protection practices of these other providers. In particular, UZH cannot guarantee that the content of other providers is free from malware.

8. Use of Social Media Plugins

No additional programs in the form of so-called “social media plugins” are used on uzhcareer.ch that transmit IP addresses directly to the providers of social networks. The operating elements of the graphical user interfaces visible on uzhcareer.ch, so-called “buttons”, are exclusively links to the corresponding providers of social networks.

9. Google Web Fonts

For the uniform display of fonts, we use Google Web Fonts on uzhcareer.ch. The required web fonts are loaded by your browser from the server when uzhcareer.ch is accessed in order to display the texts and fonts correctly. In doing so, your browser establishes a connection to Google's servers, through which Google becomes aware that uzhcareer.ch has been accessed from a device with your IP address. The use of Google Web Fonts and the associated data processing serves our interest in a uniform and appealing presentation of our online services. Further information about Google Web Fonts can be found at https://developers.google.com/fonts/faq.

10. Integration of Google Maps

uzhcareer.ch uses the Google Maps product to visually display geographical information. When Google Maps is used, Google also collects, processes and uses data about the use of the map functions by visitors. The provider is Google Inc., 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA. In order to use the functions of Google Maps, it is necessary to store your IP address. This information is usually transmitted to a Google server in the USA and stored there. The provider of this site has no influence on this data transmission. Google Maps is used in the interest of presenting our online services in an appealing way and making the locations listed on our website easy to find.

By using uzhcareer.ch, you agree to the collection, processing and use of the automatically collected data by Google Inc., its representatives and third parties. The terms of use of Google Maps can be found under “Terms of Use for Google Maps”.

11. Integration of YouTube Videos

We have integrated YouTube videos on uzhcareer.ch, which are stored on http://www.YouTube.com and can be played directly from uzhcareer.ch. YouTube is a service of YouTube LLC, 901 Cherry Ave., San Bruno, CA 94066, USA, which belongs to the Google Group. These videos are embedded in “extended data protection mode”, meaning that no data about you as a user is transmitted to YouTube if you do not play the videos. Only when you play the videos will the data mentioned in the next paragraph be transmitted. We have no influence on this data transmission.

By visiting uzhcareer.ch, YouTube receives the information that you have accessed the corresponding subpage of uzhcareer.ch. This takes place regardless of whether you have a YouTube or Google user account and whether you are logged in there or not. If you are logged in to YouTube or Google, your data will be directly assigned to your account. If you do not wish this assignment to your YouTube profile, you must log out before activating the button. YouTube stores your data as user profiles and uses them for advertising, market research and/or needs-based design of its website. You have the right to object to the creation of these user profiles, although you must contact YouTube to exercise this right.

12. Security

UZH uses technical and organizational security measures so that the data it collects and further processes via the UZHCAREER websites

  • remains confidential and is protected against accidental or unlawful access, modification or disclosure, as well as against loss and destruction; and
  • access to the data is granted exclusively according to the principle of necessity, or “need-to-know”, to those persons who must access the personal data due to their function and task.

The measures to be taken depend on the type of information, the nature and purpose of its use, and the respective state of the art.

13. Validity

UZH reserves the right to amend the privacy policy at any time with effect for the future if the implementation of new technologies or the legal situation makes such an adjustment necessary. We therefore recommend that you review the privacy policy regularly.

14. Right to Information
